If you absolutely recruit correctly, and then understand what that person's good at, let them be great at it. You know, don't try to get them to do everything. I know what I'm good at, but I also know, probably better than that, what I'm bad at. And I don't put myself in a situation where my weaknesses are exposed because hopefully as a team, we have individuals who are good at what I'm not good at, and then collectively, we become one.
WHAT HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF WORKING WITH IIP BEEN LINK?
It gives you the opportunity to understand more about what your staff think of your business. Where you're getting it right, where you're getting it wrong. I think in the main we got it right but there were areas that we'd looked to improve on when we were first awarded IIP. So as the three-year process took place and we went to the leadership module, then we went to the gold standard, we looked at how we could improve our business. So, for any business, IIP acts as a benchmark but then also as a ratchet for your business, how to take it up and work towards greater achievements.
HOW DOES IIP HELP YOU WORK WITH YOUR PEOPLE.
We put in what we call a spine to the business. The objectives individuals have, the objectives departments have and the objectives the business has. So the people can see that the difference they make is a difference made to the business. So that, effectively, is what IIP look within a business so when they're interviewing individuals and asking "are you aware of where the business is going? Are you aware of how the business is doing? Are you aware of the part you play in the business?" Everything we talk about in regular communication, be it weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly updates, they actually start to see that it does matter and it does make a difference and they do play a part so IIP confirm that for the individual. And I think it's very important. It's almost that they know it, and in the main believe it, but IIP emphasise it.
