A Study of Leadership Behaviours in Organisations

You now have the opportunity to be part of a brand new study of leadership behaviours in organisations.

We are undertaking a study of Leadership practices in Scotland. Working with the Edinburgh Institute of Leadership and Management Practice within Edinburgh Napier University Business School we aim to gain an understanding of what actions and behaviours are demonstrated in Scottish based organisations, and their perceived importance.

The purpose of the research is to test how far different leadership capabilities are present within Scottish leaders and the extent to which these issues are seen to be important in delivering the organisation’s objectives. This research promises to provide a significant body of evidence of leadership capability in Scotland.

We would like Investors in People organisations to take part in this leadership survey.

The basis for this study is the work by Gary Yukl whose comprehensive review of leadership theories and academic work, spanning the spectrum of leadership research over the last 50 years distils ten leadership functions as being the essence of effective leadership. These key functions are defined as:

  • Helping interpret the meaning of events;
  • Creating alignment on objectives and strategies;
  • Building task commitment and optimism;
  • Building mutual trust and co-operation;
  • Strengthening collective identity;
  • Organising and co-ordinating activities;
  • Encouraging and facilitating collective learning;
  • Obtaining necessary resources and support;
  • Developing and empowering people; and
  • Promoting social justice and morality
